What Arizona plumbing contractors ask before choosing coverage.
No. The Registrar of Contractors requires a contractor license bond as a condition of the license, and its own guidance to consumers says that, apart from workers’ compensation, it does not require a contractor to carry insurance to be licensed. Many customers, property managers, and general contractors do require general liability, and most contracts name a limit. So the honest answer is that the state requires the bond and the market requires the policy. We say this carefully because it is often stated the other way around.
No. The contractor license bond protects the public: when a licensed contractor fails to perform, a claim can be paid from the bond, and the contractor then owes the surety what it paid. It is a guarantee, not a policy, and it does not pay for damage to your customer’s ceiling or an injury to your tech. General liability and workers’ comp do that, and they protect you rather than the person claiming against you. Both are placed through Riza, so the bond renewal and the policy renewals line up instead of lapsing a month apart.
Arizona requires workers’ compensation of any employer that regularly employs workers, which in practice means it begins with the first employee. Whether your helper counts as an employee depends on the facts of the work, not on what the invoice calls them: who sets the hours, whose tools, whose van, and whether there is a written independent contractor agreement that meets the statute. We do not decide worker status for you. We show you the rule, the statute, and the cost of each answer, and you decide with your accountant.
Yes. Riza Risk LLC holds an Arizona insurance producer license as an agency, and its producer holds an Arizona license personally, both for property and casualty lines. That is what lets us quote and bind coverage for an Arizona plumbing contractor and place the license bond through a surety authorized in Arizona. It does not mean we have an office in Arizona, and we do not say we do. We work from where we are, and the phone number on this page reaches a licensed broker who answers it.
Nothing about the coverage changes by city today. The license classification, the bond table, and the workers’ comp trigger are set at the state level, and a plumbing contractor in Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, or Flagstaff answers the same underwriting questions. Local permitting and inspection differ, and a city can require its own business license, but those do not change the insurance program. If a city ever does change the answer, that page will exist. Until then, this one is the Arizona page.
No. You can start the quote while the license application is in progress, and many contractors do, because the bond is a condition of the license and the surety wants to see the class and the contemplated volume you are applying for. What we ask for is the classification you are applying under, the entity name and qualifying party that will appear on the license, and the annual volume you expect. When the license issues, the policy and the bond already match the record, and the certificate the first customer asks for reads correctly.
There is no single price for every Arizona contractor. Your work, payroll or revenue, vehicles, claims history and coverage choices affect the quote. Two businesses in the same state can need different protection and pay different amounts. Riza helps compare available options, including limits, exclusions, deductibles and payment terms, so the monthly price is not the only thing you see. Tell us about your business or bring your current policy to start the conversation.
Yes. Bring your current policy and tell us what has changed in the business, whether that is more people, different jobs, new vehicles or a customer asking for higher limits. We help compare available options on coverage and price and explain the differences. You can decide whether to stay or switch. If you change policies, confirm the new coverage is effective before cancelling the old one so you do not create an unintended gap.
