good to know.

Straight answers about insuring household staff.

Do I need workers’ comp for a nanny?
In many states, yes, and it’s wise even where it isn’t required. Workers’ comp covers medical bills and lost wages if a nanny, housekeeper or other employee is hurt on the job. Rules depend on your state and how many hours they work.
Does homeowners insurance cover household employees?
Usually only in limited ways. Some home policies include small amounts of coverage for domestic workers, but they rarely replace workers’ comp or employment practices coverage. Check your state’s rules and your policy together.
What is household employment practices liability?
It covers claims from household employees such as wrongful termination, discrimination or harassment. It’s often added to a personal excess policy or bought on its own. It pays for legal defense and settlements.
Are staff from an agency covered by my policy?
Usually the agency employs them and should carry their workers’ comp. Ask the agency for a certificate of insurance. If you pay staff directly, you’re likely the employer and responsible for coverage.
What insurance does a private driver need?
If a driver uses your car, list them on your auto policy. If they’re your employee, workers’ comp typically covers their own injuries on the job. High liability limits and excess coverage help protect you if they cause a serious accident.
