good to know.

Straight answers for collectors.

How do I insure a collection?
Usually with a valuables or fine art policy that schedules each significant piece at an agreed value, often with blanket coverage for smaller items. Good policies typically cover breakage, loss, theft and transit. Specialist carriers also help with appraisals and restoration after a loss.
What is the difference between blanket and scheduled coverage?
Scheduled coverage lists each piece with its own agreed value. Blanket coverage covers a category up to a total limit, often with a per-item cap, without listing every piece. Many collectors schedule their most valuable items and use blanket coverage for the rest.
Do I need appraisals for my collection?
Usually for higher-value pieces. Carriers may accept recent receipts for new purchases, but appraisals help set the right agreed value and speed up claims. How often to update them depends on the carrier and how quickly values move for what you collect.
Is my collection covered when it travels or is on loan?
Often, on a collector’s policy, though conditions apply. Many policies cover transit and loans to museums or exhibitions, sometimes with notice or approved shippers. Loan agreements may also require specific coverage, so review them together.
How do I insure a new purchase before it’s appraised?
Many collector policies cover newly acquired items automatically for a set period, up to a limit. How long and how much depend on the policy. Tell your advisor soon after the purchase and send the receipt so the piece can be scheduled.
