Nevada licenses HVAC through the State Contractors Board under C‑21, refrigeration and air‑conditioning, and a full C‑21 covers the work of every subclass from C‑21a to C‑21g. Some heating work falls under C‑1f in the plumbing and heating class instead, and every license carries a monetary limit the Board sets.

Scope in plain words. The regulation is the authority, this is the map.

C‑21: The full refrigeration and air‑conditioning license. It covers the work of every subclass below, and it isn’t incidental to any other specialty license.
C‑21a: Refrigeration. Refrigerated rooms and insulated spaces kept below 50°F, with their ducts, controls, gas lines and wiring from the unit to the main panel.
C‑21b: Air‑conditioning. Installing, repairing and servicing equipment that controls air temperature in a building, by evaporation, refrigeration, boilers or combustion, with its ductwork and controls.
C‑21c: Sheet metal. Fabricating and installing ducts, flues, flashings, gutters, food service equipment and metal roofs. Not refrigerated equipment.
C‑21d: Maintenance. Repairing and replacing parts of existing systems, like compressors, motors and coils. Not full condenser or air handler changeouts, or any change to a system’s design.
C‑21e: Solar air‑conditioning. The collectors, piping and storage that turn solar energy into heating or cooling.
C‑21f: Chilled and hot water. Boilers, chillers, coils, cooling towers, pumps and piping that move water to control temperature.
C‑21g: Industrial piping. Piping and equipment that carry water, steam, gas, chemicals or food for industrial use.
C‑1f: Part of the C‑1 plumbing and heating class. Some heating work sits here rather than under C‑21.
Monetary limit: The largest contract you can take on one site for one client. The Board sets it on every license and raises it on application with financial evidence.

What license does an HVAC contractor need in Nevada?

Usually a State Contractors Board license in the C-21 refrigeration and air-conditioning class, or a narrower subclass like C-21b air-conditioning or C-21d maintenance. A full C-21 covers every subclass. Some heating work falls under C-1f in the plumbing and heating class instead. The Board decides which license fits your work, so match yours to what you bid.

What can a C-21d maintenance license not do?

C-21d covers repairing and replacing parts of existing systems, like compressors, motors, relays, coils and heat exchangers. It doesn’t cover replacing a complete condenser assembly on a remote system, replacing an air handler, or any work that changes a system’s design. A shop doing changeouts under a maintenance license is describing work the license doesn’t allow.

Does the monetary limit change my insurance?

Not what you must carry. The monetary limit is the largest contract you can take on one site for one client, set by the Board on every license and raised on application. It does change what GCs and underwriters expect. A larger limit usually means rooftop and mechanical work, higher limits and more certificate requests.
