What New York handyman businesses ask before choosing coverage.
No. NYC’s Home Improvement Contractor requirements are local. Check each city or county where you plan to work, along with permits and any separately licensed trade. For insurance, disclose the actual locations and repair tasks. A building’s insurance request can add another set of requirements even when the licensing question is settled.
Check the city or county where each job takes place. In New York City, home improvement work costing more than $200 generally requires a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license. That NYC rule is not a statewide handyman license or a substitute for trade licensing.
An apartment building’s management company may request insurance documents beyond those needed for a license. Send the work agreement and building requirements together. In NYC, DCWP requires specified workers’ comp evidence or a valid exemption; an ACORD certificate is not accepted as that proof.
Virtually all New York employers must provide workers’ compensation for employees. Working alone can raise different questions depending on business structure. Check owner treatment and any exemption before relying on it; hiring a helper may change the answer.
There is no single price for every New York contractor. Your work, payroll or revenue, vehicles, claims history and coverage choices affect the quote. Two businesses in the same state can need different protection and pay different amounts. Riza helps compare available options, including limits, exclusions, deductibles and payment terms, so the monthly price is not the only thing you see. Tell us about your business or bring your current policy to start the conversation.
Yes. Bring your current policy and tell us what has changed in the business, whether that is more people, different jobs, new vehicles or a customer asking for higher limits. We help compare available options on coverage and price and explain the differences. You can decide whether to stay or switch. If you change policies, confirm the new coverage is effective before cancelling the old one so you do not create an unintended gap.
