New York has no statewide electrician license, so the local building department decides, and in New York City that means a Master or Special Electrician license from the Department of Buildings. The state requires workers’ comp, disability benefits and Paid Family Leave of virtually every employer.

what New York requires.

The rules that come with electrical work here.

License

No state license. The local building department decides. In New York City, a Master Electrician works as an independent contractor, and a Special Electrician works only on the premises the license names.

Workers’ comp

Required of virtually every employer, from the first employee.

Disability and paid family leave

Required of virtually every employer too, on a separate policy. Paid Family Leave rides on the disability policy.

Straight answers for New York electricians.

What license does an electrician need in New York?
It depends on the job address. New York has no statewide electrician license, and the Department of State sends licensing questions to the local building department. In New York City, the Department of Buildings issues Master Electrician licenses for independent contractors and Special Electrician licenses tied to specific premises. Other cities and counties set their own rules.
Do New York electricians need general liability insurance?
The state doesn’t require it, but New York City does. Electrician businesses there keep general liability, workers’ comp and disability insurance current with the Department of Buildings. Outside the city, ask the local building department. GCs, property managers and building owners usually ask for it too, often with additional insured wording.
Do New York electricians need workers’ comp and disability?
Yes, once you have an employee. New York requires workers’ comp, disability benefits and Paid Family Leave of virtually every employer. Workers’ comp covers injuries on the job, like a shock or a ladder fall. Disability covers injuries and illness off the job, with Paid Family Leave on that same policy, and it lapses quietly if nobody watches it.
